    The Cova Gran de Santa Linya forms an archaeological site that is located about two kilometers from the center of Santa Linya which belongs to the municipality of Les Avellanes and Santa Linya in the region of La Noguera in Catalonia.

    It was discovered in 2002 and excavations began in 2004. The formation of the Cova Gran is largely due to the erosion caused by the Sant Miquel ravine next to which it is located.[1] In 2013 it was declared a Cultural Property of National Interest.[2]

    This site is important for understanding the transit between the disappearance of Neanderthal populations and the appearance of modern man (Homo sapiens).

    The Cova Gran is a semi-vaulted shelter of large proportions (2,500 m2) that presents an important cultural sequence with levels of occupation that include events such as the Middle Paleolithic-Upper Paleolithic transition, the extinction of the Neanderthals and their relationship with the presence of the first modern humans. Other processes found there are the human presence after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), as well as the consolidation of the Neolithic.
