Emsbüren is a municipality in the southern Emsland district in Lower Saxony. The municipality's name is stressed on the second syllable. Emsbüren borders Engden and Wietmarschen to the west, the town of Lingen to the north, the Spelle collective municipality to the east, and the Salzbergen community and the town of Schüttorf to the south. Since August 2007, Emsbüren has been an officially recognized tourist destination - the first municipality in Lower Saxony to do so.

      History of Emsbüren

The place name Emsbüren (old: Büren) is derived from the Low German -büren, -bur(en) and occurs in Old High German as bur for "small house" etc., and in Middle Dutch buur for "dwelling, village". The St. Andreas Church was first mentioned in a document in 1181 and not in 819 as was long assumed on the basis of a forged document.[3] The place was in the border area of Venkigau and Bursibant. As a result, significant parts of the town were counted as part of Bursibant, but some were also part of Venkigau. The "Emsbüren parish" - "Kespel" for short, derived from Kerkspell - used to include 14 farming communities, some of which were self-governing and developed differently: some remained farming communities, others developed into independent places.

Since the 13th century, Emsbüren belonged to the Upper Diocese of Münster. In Emsbüren, there was also a Gogericht, which was exclusively responsible for the Emsbüren parish.
