The church was built in the 17th century outside the city walls at a crossroads known as Spiazzo. On the site there was previously an aedicule with an image of the Virgin Mary, which had been created around 1600 by the Salò painter Bartolomeo Mangiavino. The image was soon believed to have miraculous powers, so that it became a destination for pilgrimages.[1] In order to preserve the image of the Virgin Mary with dignity and to cope with the influx of pilgrims, a small wooden chapel was initially built. At the same time, donations were collected from the population for the construction of a church.[2]

The building project was supported by the Madruzzo family in the person of the Prince-Bishop of Trento Carlo Gaudenzio Madruzzo and his cousin and governor in Riva Giannangelo Gaudenzio Madruzzo. Thanks to the patronage of the Prince-Bishop, who de facto also took on the role of the builder, numerous artists were recruited to design the interior.[3]

Construction began as early as 1603, using stones from the Placche di Baone quarry near Arco.[4] Giannangelo Gaudenzio Madruzzo was entrusted with the supervision of the construction, and he also pushed the construction forward to underline his own family status.[3] The construction was also intended to underline his claim to power and that of the Madruzzo family on Riva, at a time when the claims of the Counts of Tyrol to the Prince-Bishopric of Trento were taking on an increasingly threatening tone despite the compacts.[5]

The church was originally called Santa Maria allo Spiazzo. Its current name was first documented in 1619.[6] It may have been renamed at the instigation of Cardinal Madruzzo, who deliberately used the name of the "Inviolate" (Italian: Inviolata) to refer to the decisions of the Council of Trent and the Counter-Reformation and to send a signal against heresy.[7]

For a long time it was assumed that the building project came from an unknown Portuguese architect. The building is now attributed to the architect Pietro Maria Bagnatore from Orzinuovi, who also carried out other works in Trentino during the period.[8]

The presbytery, built between 1607 and 1609, was the completion of the shell of the church. The subsequent painting and design of the interior took a long time. In 1611, the image of the Virgin Mary in the aedicule was moved to the main altar. In the same year, some friars of the Order of the Poor Hermits of Saint Jerome moved into the rectory and a little later, construction began on the monastery to the east of the church, which delayed the expansion of the church.[9]

After the death of Giannangelo Gaudenzio Madruzzo in 1618, who was to find his final resting place in Santa Maria Inviolata, construction was continued by his wife Alfonsina Gonzaga. In 1624, the four side altars were erected and four years later the campanile was built. The outbreak of the plague epidemic in 1630 again delayed the completion of the interior decoration.[10]

In May 1636, the altar was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo and in the 1640s, Pietro Ricchi, known as il Lucchese, completed the interior painting of the church. In 1675, the main altar was completed with the installation of the tabernacle. Shortly before Francesco Alberti di Poja took over the office of Prince-Bishop in 1677, he donated the choir stalls to the church.[11] In 1696, Santa Maria Inviolata was made a branch church of the Lateran Basilica in Rome.[12]

In the Napoleonic era, the Order of the Poor Hermits of Saint Jerome was dissolved in 1807 by order of the Bavarian government and the church and monastery were closed three years later.[13]

When the church was reopened after the Napoleonic era, the Friars Minorites moved into the monastery in 1817. In the same year, the dome was damaged in a fire and covered with a copper roof in 1822. But in 1848 the roof was again badly damaged in a storm. In 1848 the monastery was dissolved by the Austrian government and used by the military command.[13]

In 1870 the local authority of Riva acquired the church and monastery and in 1877 the monastery was entrusted to the Order of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, founded by Teresa Eustochio Verzeri. The church was restored between 1896 and 1907. During the First World War it was damaged by Italian artillery fire. The 17th-century organ, which was used until the end of the 19th century, was removed in 1930 and has since been located in the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento.[14] The monastery was dissolved in 1965. Between 1988 and 2012 the interior decorations were restored and in 2011 the restoration of the attached monastery began.[13]
