In Serón the path begins the final stretch of the climb through the Alto Almanzora to El Hijate, the last town in Almería before entering the Granada plateau of Baza. The old border crossing was guarded by the Moorish watchtower of the Torre del Ramil, the remains are visible on an isolated hill to the left of the Nature Trail. The tower was part of the defensive line of the Nasrid era between the towers of Somontín and Caniles.
