Once through the big slotted ear, the 560m long tunnel. Here you can take great pictures and in winter you can experience an amazing ice spectacle at the entrance. Large icicles have formed and sometimes hang down bizarrely from the walls.

Big Rascal Bike Tunnel - Bats attractionFormerly Schalkenmehren TunnelAbout 2 km from Daun station, over the viaduct, past the Mühlenberg, the "Lützelbacher Kopf" (507 m above sea level) was underpassed by a 560 m long tunnel. The construction - commissioned by the Royal Railway Directorate Saarbrücken, was carried out by the Hochtief company in 1907 - 1909. The tunnel is lined with Eifel basalt. In 1988 the Daun - Wittlich railway line was shut down, and in 1999 the Maare-Moselle cycle path was opened. The tunnel is illuminated today and bears the inscription "Big Slit Ear" at the entrance, which indicates a species of bat that has settled in the tunnel. Length 560 meters. It is 560 m long, making it the second longest tunnel that you can cycle through in Germany. That is why there is hardly any daylight in the middle of the tunnel. Lamps have therefore been installed for pedestrians and cyclists. A few rare visitors, however, appreciate the darkness: bats! The pipistrelle and brown long-eared bat hibernate in a wooden crate under the ceiling at the north end of the tunnel. Whiskered bats, water bats and napped bats sleep through the winter in the rest of the tunnel vault.
