The name Aptera can already be found on tablets (in linear script B) by Knossos from the 14th to the 13th century BC. From the history of the ancient city, which was founded in the 17th century BC and at the site of today's Paleokastro Megala Chorafia was not much known, although since the Minoan period it had great importance because of its strategic position, which only subsided in the Hellenistic era.
