The botanical garden of Padua, founded in 1545, is the oldest botanical garden in the world still in its original location and one of the oldest ever. Located in an area of approximately 2.2 hectares, it is located in the historic center of Padua, near the Prato della Valle. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
The Botanical Garden of Padua was created for the cultivation of medicinal plants which constituted the majority of "simple" medicines coming from nature. For this reason the original name of the garden was "Giardino dei Semplici" ("Horti Simplicium").

The University of Padua, founded in 1222, was already widely famous for the study of plants, in particular for their application to the medical and pharmacological sciences. When the Garden was founded, great uncertainty reigned regarding the identification of the plants used by the famous doctors of antiquity: errors and frauds were frequent, with very serious damage to the health of patients. The establishment of a medicinal garden was prompted by the request of Francesco Bonafede, who then held the chair of Simple Reading at the University of Padua, to facilitate the learning and recognition of authentic medicinal plants compared to adulterations. In 1545 a decree from the Senate of the Republic of Venice approved its constitution: work began immediately.

In October 2014, the new wing of the Botanical Garden, called the "Garden of Biodiversity", was inaugurated.
