On the mountain between Haschbach and Kusel, on the edge of the Feistwald forest, just 50 metres behind the Haschbach sports field, the strangest tree shape in the Westrich stretches its bizarre branches into the sky, the so-called "Hubertus oak". This name is probably of more recent origin and could have come from hunting circles.

Julius Wilde described the tree as "wart oak" in 1936 and even depicted it twice in his work on the natural monuments of the Palatinate. This name is due to the strange growths with which the trunk of this tree is covered all around like no other from a height of around 1 metre. These are burls that form when leaf buds accumulate in a very small space and die, a disease that also affects birch, beech, poplar and elm trees. However, as can be seen from this warty oak, its lifespan does not seem to be affected by this.

Below this bulge, at a height of around 80 cm, it now measures 4.50 metres, at breast height it is already 5.51 metres, and at its thickest point, at a height of around 2 metres, it is exactly 6 metres. This would make the warty oak the second thickest tree in the Kusel district after the mill oak near Börsborn. Estimates of its age vary widely and fluctuate between 250 and 500 years. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, at 350 to 400 years, which would also make it one of the oldest trees in our region.
