The lock keeper at the port of Cadzand Bad stands there, braving wind and weather. His gaze is always directed at the port and the open sea. A beautiful monument for selfies and group photos.

The sculpture of the "Sluuswachter" at the marina in Cadzand-Bad is often used as a companion model for selfies. But what is behind this figure, which looks down on the marina and the North Sea from the dike above the "Uitwaterung Canal"? When the drainage canal was dug for the polder areas in the hinterland of Cadzand between 1870 and 1875 with wheelbarrows, shovels and a lot of human muscle power, one man became increasingly important: the lock keeper. The vital task of the "Sluuswachter" was to observe the tide level of the North Sea and to close the heavy lock gates at high tide against the thundering North Sea waves in order to protect the hinterland of Cadzand from flooding by the sea water flowing in via the drainage canal. The lock keeper: Cadzand's important guardian of the tides

Conversely, the "Sluuswachter" had to open the gates again at low tide so that the water pumped from the fields below sea level could flow into the open sea through the "Uitwateringkanaal". Today, the "Sluuswachter" statue on the modern, automatically operated pumping station ("Gemaal") on the dike wall commemorates this responsible task and the lock keepers of that time. The model for the figure by sculptor Guido Metsers, which has been looking out over the North Sea since 2000 and the marina since 2017, was Piet de Lijser, the last "Sluuswachter van t' haventje va Kezand".
