A parish church was already standing in Varniai during the founding year of the Medininkai Diocese. It was built by Vytautas the Great in 1413-1416 (in the same place where the wooden parish church of St. Alexander now stands), and consecrated in 1417 and named St. In the name of Alexander (martyr of Cappadocia, later bishop of Yaruzale), because that was the Christian name of Duke Vytautas the Great. It is probably one of the oldest churches in Žemaitia. In the past 500 years, this church is the fourth in this place. Its current appearance dates from 1779. and its architectural value is an example of late Lithuanian baroque and wooden folk architecture. After the Second World War, it was closed and barbarically destroyed by the occupying Soviet authorities. However, during the last decade, the church was returned to the faithful and restored.
