Il Malpasso is one of the most significant places of the Battle of Trasimene. Right here, in June 217 BC, Hannibal Barca used the terrain's conformation to set an ambush for the Roman army.
This narrow strip of land, squeezed between the lake and the hills, was the ideal spot to surprise the Romans, who until then were accustomed to fighting battles in open fields. Hannibal's attack is considered one of the most famous examples of an ambush in military history.
