The former settlement structure of Neustadt, with its town church, market square, and connecting streets, is largely preserved today. Grabenstraße, Waschgrabenallee, Schiffbrücke, "Untere Querstraße," "Am Binnenwasser," and Haakengraben (clockwise) enclose the former medieval settlement. Of the old city fortifications and three city gates, only the northern Kremper Tor at Haakengraben remains. The other two gates were located to the west at Schiffbrücke with the Brücktor, and to the east at Hochtorstraße with the Hochtor.

Hiking

Neustadt was, as the name suggests, artificially founded. The town was founded in 1244 at the instigation of Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg. It was intended to establish a new centre on the Baltic coast in place of Altenkrempe, which developed quickly. In the townscape, the planned foundation can still be clearly seen in the houses and the streets.

There are not many restaurants directly on the market square, but there is a wide selection spread throughout the town.
