The church was built of rubble stones and its core dates back to the first half of the 13th century. The nave has a rectangular plan. A semi-circular apse is attached to the east side. On the west side there is a transverse rectangular church tower. In 1731 both the steeple and the nave were raised and the church as a whole was rebuilt. In the late 19th century the tower was given brick gables. At the same time, an extension was added to the west side of the tower.

The church in Untermaschwitz is a Romanesque building with a west transept tower, nave and east chancel, as can still be found in some villages today. What is unusual, however, is the extension on the west side of the tower. The nave was visibly rebuilt in the Baroque style, the western extension seems to be even younger. The churchyard contains a morgue, a mausoleum and a war memorial.
