The 1000 ton iron ship Zuleika left Dunedin for Wellington on 14 April 1897. There was no wind outside Taiaroa Head until a breeze picked up late the following day. After passing the Banks Peninsula (near Christchurch) she ran into a storm around midnight on 15 April. She sighted land around 11pm on 16 April and tried unsuccessfully to avoid it. The ship grounded 4 miles (6 km) from Cape Palliser Lighthouse and began to break up around 2am, so the crew donned life jackets, abandoned ship and made their way to shore. Of the 21 crew, only 12 survived.
