It stands out religiously in Brazil due to the history of its patron saint, Our Lady of Nazareth, who annually holds the oldest Candle of Nazareth in Brazil. Tamoios Indians, for centuries dominated the coastal part where today the seat of the municipality of Saquarema is located and nicknamed the lagoon “SOCÓ-REMA”, which means flocks of socós (a wading bird abundant in the lagoon at that time) and with the evolution of language, it came to be called SAQUAREMA.
