The Rupperswil-Auenstein power plant (KRA) is a run-of-river power plant on the Aare, between the Aargau municipalities of Rupperswil and Auenstein.
The power plant has a capacity of 40 MW, which is applied by two Kaplan turbines. It uses the slope of the Aare on a river length of 7.3 km, which exploits a mean drop height of almost eleven meters. The generator of the northern group of turbines generates electricity with a frequency of 50 Hz for the national supply, the generator of the group located south generates traction current with a frequency of 16⅔ Hz.

Traction current from hydropower for the Central Plateau.

The Rupperswil-Auenstein run-of-river power plant is an important and sustainable component of the traction power supply in the Swiss Plateau. The 75 year old generator is currently being renewed. The plant will then cover around 10 percent of SBB's energy requirements and make a significant contribution to the implementation of the SBB energy strategy, which provides that all trains will run on renewable energy from 2025.
The SBB intends to replace the current utilization with a license. In addition, the SBB will replace the 50 Hz generator with a traction current generator by autumn 2021 so that the plant can produce twice the amount of environmentally friendly traction current from hydropower for the Central Plateau in the future.
