Begau is a southeastern settlement of the town of Alsdorf in the Aachen urban region, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Originally a miners' settlement of the Ley settlement type, it was named after the former field "Auf der Begau"1. The name "Begau" is probably a combination of "Beek" (former stream) and "Au" (pasture), as the original heathland was used as pasture for cattle.
