This is the old railbed, which has changed hands several times over the years. Currently, an ATV club controls most of the trail. This section also includes a subsection along Mud Lake that is closed to motorized vehicles. The trail is more challenging when wet, as there are boggin' holes that can be 4'+ deep, though are often rideable along the edges with wet pedals and dry or wet feet, depending. When wet, the mud can be very sticky, and, combined with the finer aggregate surfaces, can totally end the prospect of traveling the trail with a bike with fenders (this is more relevant to the sections of the trail south of Theresa and towards Philly, rather than north of Theresa towards Redwood). Surfaces range from sand to mud to dirt to chunky stone to chip stone. I have ridden the trail with 700x42c gravel wheels on a drop bar bike, even with loaded front panniers and quill stem, but, in consideration of the entire trail, I suggest a minimum of 27.5x2.2 if you want to actually ride and not pickily underbike your way through some tuff stuff. The extension to Clayton is mostly closed private land now, unfortunately, but TILT is reopening the bridge section near town.
