Formerly the Blackball Hilton, the hotel was founded in 1910 as the Dominion Hotel, but changed its name to the Blackball Hilton in the 1970s, after the mine manager (who also gave the town's main street, Hilton Street, its name). The hotel changed its name after a curious legal dispute with international hotel chain Hilton Hotels & Resorts.
