The Sizandro River is over 40 km long. Its source is in Sapataria (Sobral de Monte Agraço) and its mouth is here. In the Middle Ages, this river was navigable for a long stretch, and it was possible to reach Torres Vedras by boat. Since then, the river has silted up with sand and silt, making it no longer navigable and curving southwards along the beach.
Today, the river's connection with the sea is not permanent. When the river's flow is low, a sandbar interrupts this connection. This sandbar is often opened or closed artificially to allow water to circulate.
