It can be assumed that the chapel was built at the same time as Hohenwang Castle, i.e. no later than 1160, and was located within the castle. As early as 1249, Dominus Heiricus was mentioned as vicar Heinrich von Hohenwang, the first priest of the parish.
The chapel was rebuilt a little later and was therefore re-consecrated in 1265. The beautiful late Gothic winged altar, which is now in the parish church, originally came from the old castle chapel.
In 1700, a lightning strike caused major damage to the chapel tower. After the Schäffenbergers left the castle in 1780, the castle chapel also fell into disrepair.
Construction of the current chapel began in 1858. It was consecrated on July 2, 1860, the day of the Visitation of Mary.
