The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is the small church of Querceto, a hamlet of the municipality of Montecatini Val di Cecina, in the province of Pisa, diocese of Volterra.
The castle of Querceto, built on a rocky spur of the Montaneo hill, was the possession of the nobles of Querceto in the 12th century, before passing to the bishops of Volterra and the abbots of Monteverdi Marittimo and finally in 1252 to the Municipality of Volterra.
The church, obstructed in the 13th century within the walls of the castle of Querceto, replaced an older one which was located in the open countryside.
It is a hut-type construction, composed of regular rows of small sandstone blocks. The simple portal is surmounted by a majolica from the Ginori manufactures from the beginning of the 20th century.
The interior, with trusses and a single nave, was concluded by a semicircular apse, replaced today by the quadrangular choir, with a protruding transept whose arms are accessed through a double arch on each side.
The capitals of the columns present a decorative variety ranging from large aquatic leaves to a series of caulicles. The capital of the semi-column, on the right, shows the symbols of three evangelists, Mark, Matthew and John.
