In 1818 the street was laid out as Hallesche Straße, from 1928 it was called Hallische Straße and in 1945 the name was changed to Georg-Schumann-Straße, named after the resistance fighter.
It crosses the districts of Leipzig (No. 1-9 & 2-22), Eutritzsch (No. 24-34), Gohlis (No. 11-165 & 36-144), Möckern (No. 167-293 & 146-268) and Wahren ( No. 295-459 & 270-418).
