Hokyointo (a type of Japanese pagoda) built about 700 years ago in the late Kamakura period.
This pagoda stands on the trade route between Kyoto and Kamakura. This section of road was once feared as “hell” because it has very steep mountain passages and leads through a desolate landscape with clouds of smoke.
This area around Lake Shojin was sacred to the Jizo faith. They built numerous Jizo stone statues and pagodas here to protect travelers as they passed through this area.
