The Nelson Mandela Bridge is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the A12 and connects the Driemanspolder and Rokkeveen districts. The bridge also provides access to the platforms of the NS, the Gouda-The Hague railway line and the Randstadrail to The Hague. The bridge was designed by architect Hans Bak and opened in 1992. The bridge was necessary because the old cable-stayed bridge could not handle the number of visitors to the Floriade in 1992. The bridge consists of steel and glass, in the colors blue and yellow, which appear in the Zoetermeer municipal coat of arms. The maintenance of the bridge, especially window cleaning, requires a lot of money. There have also been many problems with escalators and elevators and their replacement. In 2022, it was discovered that there were cracks in the supporting structure and the bridge was closed for some time. The roof structure has now been removed over the motorway and a temporary footbridge has been placed.
Plans are now being developed for a new public transport hub in which the Nelson Mandela Bridge can continue to play a role.
