Built between 1884 and 1889, the Köthen water tower is now a historical monument. The huge structure made of yellow clinker bricks has a height of 33 m and a circumference of 46 m.

As a testament to the emergence of central water supply in the cities of the Wilhelminian era, the water tower was able to fully begin work in 1890. With its completion, a storage tank for drinking water and a way to equalize the water pressure in the pipe network were created.

After almost 100 years of use, the tower was decommissioned in 1983 due to significant structural damage. Extensive reconstruction work followed from June to November 1991, in which the tower body was recreated true to the original and a new stainless steel tank with a mass of 23 tons and a useful capacity of 500 m³ of water was installed. The roof structure, the windows, the pipes as well as the electrical and lightning protection system were also replaced.

In 1994, the structure was finally shut down with the commissioning of the Köthen Süd waterworks as well as the storage tanks and the North pumping station.

The monument, which is still worth seeing today, can be visited on Monument Day. MIDEWA also offers the opportunity to make the tower accessible to interested groups separately upon arrangement.
