From prehistoric times to the 19th century

People already lived in the area of today's Geeste community in prehistoric times. This is evidenced by large stone graves from the Stone Age (3300 - 2500/2200 BC) on the Hümmling as well as Geester archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, the pre-Roman Iron Age and the Roman Imperial Age (2500/2200 BC - approx. 375 AD). ). There are individual finds from the Dalum/Geeste area from the pre-Roman Iron Age. A small bronze needle was discovered in an urn in the Kottbree construction area. As early as the 1950s, an extensive urn cemetery was discovered southeast of Dalum in the “Dalen” corridor. A bronze ax was also found on the Kottheide.

In the course of Christianization since 780 AD, corresponding place names of these old settlements on the Ems river can be found for the first time in written documents, including Dalum (first mentioned around 1000 as “Dalem”)

After the flood, the Ems deposited a lot of sand on its banks.
