The detached village tower forms the striking sign in the center of the village of Nes. The bell tower, built of yellow stone, stands on a small elevation. The tower was built in 1664 by order of Valerius (Watse) Frans van Cammingha and Rixt van Donia, then the Lord and Lady of Ameland.
In 1732, the village tower was raised by order of Prince Willem IV, then Lord of Ameland, to serve as a beacon for shipping. From then on, the original spire gave way to the current gable roof.
