Thermal resort - Beppu is the largest thermal resort in Japan. The earth spits out steam, mud and boiling hot water everywhere from a depth of 250 - 300 meters. As early as the Kamakura period (12th - 14th century AD), a Buddhist monk founded a spa here and to this day, Japanese people hope for relief from various ailments from the thermal springs, the so-called “onsen”. There are said to be a total of 3,000 springs in this area. Please note that tattoos are not permitted in Japanese baths. The typical onsen where you bathe naked are usually separated according to gender.
