Spectacular freshwater loch in the Highlands, about 10 km long and up to 86 metres deep, surrounded by mountains and some of Scotland's wildest scenery. It is known for trout and salmon fishing, its ancient geology, and the ruins of Ardvreck Castle on its shore. Legend has it that the daughter of a MacLeod chief threw herself into its waters and became the mysterious mermaid of Assynt, who is said to still inhabit the loch.
