Before the tunnel was built in 1935/36, the road led over the Moki saddle and was impassable in winter. The tunnel was adapted and expanded in 1985 to accommodate modern vehicles. After the film "Lord of the Rings" it was nicknamed "Hobbit's Hole". A sign to this effect was hung in the tunnel entrance.
