In 1818, the Tomb of Nellesteyn was erected on the highest spot of the Donderberg. Architect Jan David Zocher was responsible for the design of this family tomb. It was the final resting place for Mr. Cornelis Jan van Nellesteyn, who previously lived in Broekhuisen Castle. After his wife died, he married his housekeeper, who was already five months pregnant at the time. His children from his first marriage were not happy with this situation, so as a kind of "making up" he built the tomb on the Donderberg. Funnily enough, the tomb was on a line with the castle, which meant that his children from the first marriage looked out on their own graves every day.

At the bottom of the tomb is the crypt of the Nellesteyn family. It wasn't until 1822 that the first person was buried there. There were no further burials after 1917.

After the Valwind catastrophe in June 2021, there are not many trees left around the tomb. The walking paths have also been adjusted. There is also a mountain bike route through it.

Walking near Leersum and missing this classic is not possible, right?
Also look at the devastated forest on the east side...............sad sight!

The area is fully accessible again. Almost all paths are walkable again.
