The small church village of Grütz an der Havel was first mentioned in 1381 as “Grocz”. The Slavs used to affectionately call this piece of earth “Gruda”, which means something like “floe”. The later name was derived from this.
The name “Grosz” can be found in the oldest loan books of the Magdeburg archbishops. In 1443/44 the community was mentioned as “Grutz”. The von Treskow family lived here for a long time.
After many disasters, a fire destroyed the entire village, including the school and church, on August 10, 1802. The Grützers built a new church and rebuilt the entire village by 1806.
