The Cathedral/Basilica of St. John Lateran

The basilica houses the Pope's "chair," a sign that he is a "shepherd." While academic chairs consist of "tables" on which books are placed, cathedral chairs consist of a seat, for it is through the spoken word and witness that the faith is primarily transmitted.

But teaching certainly remains one of the most beautiful expressions of charity. "To advise the doubtful," "to teach the ignorant," "to rebuke sinners" are spiritual works of mercy: The Bishop of Rome—and with him the Church—received from Christ the mission of preaching, for man needs a word that illuminates his life. This need is still alive today, in a confusing time similar to that of Christ: "Jesus saw a large crowd and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and he began to teach them many things" (Mark 6:34).

From the "chair," the Pope who sits there does not teach himself, nor does he affirm his own opinion, but rather the Word of God, whose minister he is, so that it may shine before all.

These images teach that evil exists and must be fought, but that Christ is far stronger, not only because he protects the Church from the attacks of the enemy, but much more because he is able to rescue from evil those who are in sin and death, as faith proclaims: Christ descended into hell and brought forth all humanity. Evil is not forgotten, but actively conquered and defeated.

The ritual of electing each new Pope still ends today with his installation on this chair. The Pope walks in procession from St. Peter's Basilica to the Basilica and sits on the throne, surrounded by all the clergy of Rome, who pray for him and applaud him.

You can get here through a park-like area with a pilgrim statue. There are small restaurants around the square with very good and cheap food and drinks. At the back of the basilica you will find the palace, the loggia and an obelisk.

Unfortunately there is a rather large intersection in front
