Behind it is the beginning of a wooden footbridge that leads over the water to a freshly built cycle path. A fisherman who greeted me behind the gate was clearly happy that I had found my way to him and that he could send me on across the jetty. I suspect that the gate is only intended to keep cars out. Of course, politeness dictates that you close it again after passing through :-)
