Karol Wojtyla, better known to many as “Pope John Paul II,” was born in Wadowice, Poland, in 1920 and became his successor after the death of Pope John Paul I in the “Year of the Three Popes” in 1978 – a complete surprise to almost everyone elected the head of the Catholic Church.
As a young man, he had experience of dictatorships under the unjust Nazi regime of German-occupied Poland and later under communist rule. At the time of the so-called "Cold War", his support for freedom movements, especially in the countries of Eastern Europe, and his role in the fall of the so-called "Iron Curtain", which separated the Western European states from the Eastern Bloc, were correspondingly great and passionate.
