We are in September 1987, when Tibor, at twenty-one years of age, and his father Farkas Kálnoky, would travel by car to visit the old ancestral houses of their family. The trip was a turning point in the life of the young count, who would later become known throughout the world as the renovator of the Castle at Miklosvár, and as a friend of Prince Charles of Wales. In 1995, he got married within the walls of the old 17th century castle, a marriage from which three sons were born. The family wasn’t only confronted with the terrifying images of the ruined house, but also with the task of finding their place in the secular chain of history severed by communism. Leaving behind the aristocratic circles in Western Europe, the family would move to an unknown community in Transylvania, overcoming the difficulties that come with reconstruction, which at first seemed like an unending process. The family’s legacy was transformed into a complex put to serve the public. The castle at Miklósvár wasn ́t alone in being transformed into a building that bears the prints of our centuries old culture, the revitalized peasant house of Erdővidék have also become worthy of our cultural heritage, of which we can all be proud of. Miklosvár is no longer a village to ignore and pass by. With its renovated houses, the Museum of Transylvanian Life, with the local shop in the “Stone Pub” offering local produce, the village has become well known throughout Europe. The hospitality of count Tibor Kálnoky’s estate can be experienced for family and business-related events. Visitors can discover the region or take part in equestrian tours for several days, they can experience traditional meals together with fellow travelers at the table d’hôte in the wine cellar and sleep in museum-like cottages from the village. Meanwhile, Tibor and Anna Kálnoky also created a similar retreat for Prince Charles at Zalánpatak (Valea Zălanului) which His Royal Highness has become very fond of. They have set up the Kálnoky Foundation which supports social and educational programmes for the local youth in the villages.

*Based on the speech of praise by Tüdős Kinga towards Tibor Kálnoky, presented on November 24th 2017 at the Miklósvár.
