The town hall with the market square

The old town hall and the city archives were completely destroyed in the great city fire of 1485. As early as 1490, the city council decided to build a new town hall, which still meets the requirements of the time today because of its solid construction, simple beauty and practicality. The town hall, which is a listed building, was expanded in 1609 and renovated in 1907. It consists of a two-story plastered building with gables; to the south there are crossed decorative brick bands. Next to the entrance door in the interior are medieval symbols of crafts, trade and jurisdiction (butcher's knife, cubit, stone bushel, handcuffs). On the east side is the main entrance with the outside staircase, which is covered by a pillar-supported canopy. The Ratskeller (cross vault) was extensively renovated.
