The Preah Vihear temple, dedicated to Shiva, is located on the edge of a plateau which dominates the Cambodian plain. Composed of a series of sanctuaries connected by a system of causeways and stairs extending over an axis of 800 m, the temple dates from the first half of the 11th century. Its complex history, however, dates back to the 9th century, when a hermitage was founded. This site is particularly well preserved, mainly because of its remote location. The ensemble is exceptional for its architecture, adapted both to the natural constraints of the site and the religious functions of the temple, as well as for the quality of the sculpted stone ornamentation.
