Lock groupThe Meppen lock was built between 1953 and 1956 and consists of two separate lock chambers, each designed as an economy lock. It is therefore also known as the Meppen lock group. The Meppen Waterways and Shipping Authority is responsible.
The lock chambers are constructed using sheet pile construction and the upper and lower heads are made of solid reinforced concrete. The chambers are closed with a lifting and lowering gate towards the upper water. Lifting gates are arranged in the lower water, the counterweights of which are each held by two striking steel frame structures. Due to its historical and urban significance, the lock group is recognized as an architectural monument.
The eastern small Meppen lock has a usable length of 100 m and is 12 m wide. The western Great Meppen Lock is also 12 metres wide, but it is 165 metres long and was completely renovated between 2005 and 2007. Theoretically, it could accommodate inland waterway vessels of class Vb.
