Would you have thought that there were elephants and camels here in Idaho? The historical marker, erected directly on the West Arco Highway, tells the story of the elephant hunters who hunted big game here more than 12,000 years ago. Among them were elephants, huge bison and camels. It was only when the climate slowly warmed up and the grasslands turned into desert that these animals moved further north to cooler areas. What remained for a long time were the bison, which were indigenous here until 1840.
