At the western end of the municipality of Sant Llorenç de la Muga is a neighborhood of farmhouses known as El Palau, presided over by the hermitage of Santa Maria. To get to the place we will have to take the road that goes from Sant Llorenç de la Muga to Albanyà. A little more than 5 km from the town, on the right hand side, you can see the silhouette of the hermitage, next to the small manso.

It is a church with a single nave, covered with a pointed barrel vault and closed, to the East, with a semicircular apse that is covered with an equally pointed quarter-sphere vault. The façade at the foot contrasts with its monumental character with the rest of the factory, in particular because of the enormous belfry that crowns it, with two openings and a gable roof.

The site of Palau (Palatio), bathed by the Muga, is already mentioned in several documents from the 9th and 10th centuries. Of the chapel, however, there is no news before the end of the 19th century. xiii, when it appears among the churches with their own income mentioned in the Rationes Decimarum of the years 1279 and 1280.
