What is now a pond surrounded by wetlands was originally prairie terrain before the construction of the Dixboro Dam flooded the area, turning it into a body of water. Chalmers and Malletts Creeks drain into the pond, which is gradually transforming into marshland over time. Across the way from this dynamic, changing landscape lies an oak savanna ecosystem, a rare and unique habitat dominated by oak trees and characterized by sparse groundcover and incredible biodiversity.
