Prepare for a challenging road cycling adventure on the Cascading Rivers Scenic Bikeway, a difficult route spanning 68.1 miles (109.7 km). As you pedal, you will gain a significant 4626 feet (1410 metres) in elevation, a journey that typically takes around 6 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The route immerses you in ancient, dense forests, following the wild courses of the Clackamas and Breitenbush Rivers, where you can spot rocky riffles, quiet pools, and even cascading waterfalls.
When planning your ride, aim for late spring through fall, as the route is generally closed during the colder months due to snow. Road maintenance is only active during these warmer periods, so you will find the best conditions then. Be aware that while the road is mostly good, some sections within the national forest can be narrow and winding, offering limited shoulder space for cyclists.
This bikeway offers more than just a physical test; it's a scenic exploration with majestic mountain views of Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson on the horizon. Consider making a stop at the relaxing Breitenbush Hot Springs to unwind after your demanding ride. The route provides a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the region, making it a memorable outing for experienced cyclists.
