Prepare for a difficult jogging challenge on the Linville Gorge Wilderness Loop, a rugged 12.4 miles (20.0 km) route that demands 3370 feet (1027 metres) of elevation gain. You can expect to complete this demanding journey in about 3 hours and 40 minutes, navigating through dense forests and past impressive rock formations. As you push through the terrain, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views from spots like Table Rock Mountain, looking out over the vast Pisgah National Forest. The atmosphere here is wild and untamed, often called the "Grand Canyon of North Carolina," offering a truly immersive wilderness experience.

This route is very strenuous, so come prepared with strong navigation skills; many trails within the wilderness are not signed or blazed. Be aware that river crossings can be treacherous, as bridges might be washed out, and locating water sources on the gorge rim can be difficult. If you plan to camp, remember that permits are required on weekends and holidays from May through October, so secure yours in advance. Always check current conditions before heading out.

The Linville Gorge Wilderness is a unique natural area, often compared to the Grand Canyon for its dramatic geological features and deep, rugged chasm. It's one of the few wilderness areas in the eastern United States, preserving a pristine environment with old-growth forests and diverse ecosystems. This trail offers a chance to experience the raw beauty of the Pisgah National Forest, showcasing its ancient rock formations and cascading waters. It stands out as a significant challenge for those seeking a true wilderness adventure in North Carolina.
