City Palace Jaipur, which includes the Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal palaces and other buildings, and a complex of monumental palaces in Jaipur, the capital of the state of Rajasthan, India. It was the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the leader of the Rajput clan of Kachwaha. The Chandra Mahal Palace is now a museum, but most of it is still a royal residence. Located northeast of the center of Jaipur's checkerboard layout, the palace complex includes an impressive and vast array of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The palace was built between 1729 and 1732, originally by Sawai Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer. He designed and built the outer walls, which were later added by other monarchs until the 20th century. The urban layout of the city and its structures are credited to two architects, namely Vidyadar Bhattacharya, the chief architect of the royal court, and Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob, apart from Sawai himself, who was an enthusiastic architectural enthusiast. The architects achieved the Shilpa Shastra fusion of Indian architecture with Rajput, Mughal and European styles of architecture.
