It is unknown when the gate and tower were built. In 1218, however, the Archbishop of Salzburg, to which Mühldorf belonged at the time, granted the cathedral chapter the right to have food from the Erding area brought into Mühldorf duty-free through the "porta exterior" (the outer gate). This gate, also called the Fleischtor, was located at the end of the Fleischbänke and was not only part of the city fortifications, but also served as a customs office.
