The most central point of the city, its square, with its numerous shops and cafes around it, is a pole of attraction as well as a meeting point for both residents and visitors.

Bike paths and trails for pedestrians and extensive green spaces guarantee you a pleasant stroll along this elongated 400square meters square.

In the last 100 years,depending on the political situation, the name of the Square has changed already 12 times!

Thus from Square 'Tzanis', name derived from the first cafe of the square with Tzanis Karabinis as an owner,it becomes 'Kapnokoptiriou' after housed, in a building on the square the smoke-tobacco house of the city. In 1912, takes the name ' Successor Constantine's' , by decision of the city council, as a sign of honor to the successor Constantine for his proud victories.

In 1926 ,according to the minutes of the municipality,it was again renamed square 'Venizelos', a name which lasted only 9 years, and was removed in 1935 as it was named after the name of a wicked -villain politician, to later be square 'King Constantine'.

Three years only and it was the turn of King George II, to replace 'King Constantine' back in 1938 and become ' King George II Square',while 'Square people's School', followed that name ,with then 'Square Trianon' and 'Heroes Square', and 'Square ELAS',also ' Square of National Resistance' to finally take it's current-official name,in 1992, half a century later, to be called 'Square King George II'.

In King George Square of Kalamata there is the construction “Freedom” , a monument to the fighters of the Revolution, Kolokotronis, Papaflessas and Mavromichalis. The monument was work of sculptors Theodoros Kolokotronis and Aliki Chatzi in 1978.
