This 10-foot wide elevated boardwalk provides access to the wetlands along the Potomac. In addition to acting as a natural water filter, these wetlands provide important habitat for wildlife, especially bird populations of herons, mallards, wood ducks and more.

East Coast Greenway: Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge Loop

The East Coast Greenway: Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge Loop offers a peaceful escape into nature, blending flat, easy cycling with abundant wildlife viewing. You'll pedal through diverse habitats like wetlands, native grasslands, and mature forests, with opportunities to spot everything from bald eagles to white-tailed deer. The highlight is often the 2-mile Wildlife Drive within the refuge, where the scenery is constantly changing and the chance of spotting wildlife is high, providing a tranquil oasis just south of D.C.

This easy 11.9-mile (19.1 km) touring cycling route, with a minimal 301 feet (92 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes just over an hour. The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge is free to enter, but check their website for varying seasonal hours before you go. While the refuge sections are very beginner-friendly, be aware that some on-road segments of the East Coast Greenway outside the refuge can have narrow shoulders and higher-speed traffic, so plan your route accordingly if you're extending your ride.

This loop is a fantastic segment of the ambitious 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway, showcasing its potential for connecting natural areas. The refuge itself is a significant draw, boasting over 600 plant species and a remarkable variety of wildlife in a relatively small area. It's a prime example of how conservation efforts create accessible havens for both nature and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and an easy ride.
