The Schulenberg Prairie on the West Side of The Morton Arboretum stands as a pioneering 100+ acre restored tall grass prairie, savanna, and wetland habitat. Initiated in 1962, it aimed to return cultivated land back to Midwestern prairie. When hiking the paths in summer, you're surrounded by native grasses and flowers abuzz with butterflies, bees, and birds that make this lush habitat their home. Little bluestem, big bluestem, prairie dropseed, and Indian grass are among the many grasses waving in the breeze. Coneflowers, asters, shooting stars, and more wildflowers bloom in turns through the seasons. The prairie supports abundant pollinators and choruses of birds with its rich bounty. Wandering through the Schulenberg Prairie offers an immersive glimpse into a thriving restored prairie ecosystem right in the heart of the Midwest.
